Why all Libertarians should be pro-life

Far too often I run into libertarians who are personally and morally against abortion but still support legalized abortion, simply because it is not the government's job to tell people what to do with their lives. Which as a libertarian myself, I totally get and understand. In the words of Rand Paul, “I want a government really really small, so small you can barely see it.”

But this is why even in the smallest of governments, abortion should be made illegal.

Advocates (commonly objectivists and minarchists) of the night watchman government believe government should exist with the limited responsibility of keeping people safe from outside aggressors, as well as each other. In this bare-bone state, victimless crimes like traffic citations and gambling would not be a thing, but since abortion deliberately takes the life of another human being, there is a clear victim and surely the government would protect the un-born from abortion.

Libertarianism is also largely based on the non-aggression principle, which to put it very simply is this: it is morally wrong to initiate aggression. Force is justified only when combating force. Again, since abortion deliberately takes the life of an innocent human life, it is therefore a direct violation of the non-aggression principle.

All forms of libertarians, even objectivists, want at least some government, and even the most bleak government should oppose the murder of innocent human life. Limited government does not justify abortion, so no matter how libertarian you are, if you believe human life begins at conception (That’s another article) you should support making abortion illegal.
