On Wednesday in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Donald Trump took a position where if abortion is made illegal, any women to have one would be legally punished and even I'm like uh...what?
He later went back on this position and released a statement saying, “If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman.”
This is just my theory, but when Donald Trump realized the vast majority of pro-lifers strongly disagreed with punishing women who have abortions, he took it back in hopes of gaining our support. But I for one do not trust Donald Trump with pro-life issues and would strongly encourage anyone else who is pro-life to do the same. He has never taken a clear issue on life, and up until recently when he needed support from pro-lifers, he called himself “pro-choice in every respect.” He doesn't care about the unborn and their mothers; he only cares about getting elected.
While it is true that few individual pro-lifers do support punishing women, those most active in the movement definitely do not. And the most influential pro-life organizations like Students for Life of America and March for Life have come out on social media condemning Mr. Trump’s statement.
Donald Trump does not understand the pro-life movement. If he did, he would know that pro-lifers are not fighting women, we are fighting the abortion industry. Both the unborn and women are the victims of abortion, and being a pro-life activist is about helping both. Abortion greatly damages women, and the last thing they need is punishment. We should show them compassion so that they can find healing and forgiveness.
Often women feel like they have no other option but abortion, which is why it’s so important that we continue to work on providing women with the resources they need so that they can be empowered to to choose life in the future. Abortionist are the one’s who should be punished when abortion is made illegal, not women...they’re the ones taking innocent human life and hurting women.
